Exhibit: Motorcycle Memories Exhibition
Location: Fort Smith Museum of History
Contact: (479) 783- 7841

  • To be unveiled right before the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) rides in for Rally on the Border, June 19-22, in Fort Smith. Exhibit unites the “art of the motorcycle” with the generation of Americans that enjoy a lifestyle peculiar to the American mainstream. Strives to educate future generations about a fascinating spectrum of Americana. See vintage motorcycles, memorabilia and reproductions of personal photographs. Photographs of a local, well-known motorcycle shop, owned by Quinn Winters, that operated in Fort Smith from the 1940s through the 1970s, opens exhibit. His sons, Leroy and Robert Winters, gained national fame for their accomplishments in the field of motorcycle racing. Leroy Winters, who became nationally prominent as the winner of the 1956 Jack Pine Enduro while riding a modified Harley-Davidson motorcycle, foreshadowing modern off-road endurance competition motorcycles, later earned a place in the American Motorcycle Hall of Fame. In 1966, Robert Winters, riding a Yamaha motorcycle, took first place in the 250 Grand Prix in Daytona, California. After a decade of professional racing, Winters went on to stunt and camera work in movies. By 1975, Robert, a strong advocate for safety equipment and road safety, had moved seriously into test-driving, riding for Goodyear, Kawasaki and others. Ercie Gann, a Fort Smith resident, was one of the charter members in the Motor Maids, a national organization of women motorcyclists formed in 1940 with 51 members. Membership required (and still does) that a woman legally own and operate her own motorcycle or one belonging to a family member. Gann is known as Fort Smith’s “First Lady” of motorcycles. Photographs of the Razorback Run, a 150-mile roundtrip ride from Fort Smith to White Rock Mountain, also featured. From 1952-55, the annual event drew motorcycle enthusiasts from a regional area. An exhibit featuring six vintage motorcycles from the names that made racing history: a 1962 BSA Gold Star; a 1954 Vincent Black Lightning; a 1968 Triumph TR6C; and a 1948 Indian Chief runs June 17-22. Throughout the summer, the exhibit features photographs, memorabilia and interpretive programs. The Winters family helped shape and change the sport of motorcycling. Through the efforts and support of Robert Winters, this fascinating exhibit is made possible. This project is supported in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

July 1-August  30  —  Library Hours

Exhibit: Photographs by J.P. Bell and Tom Kennon
Location: FSPL-3201 Rogers Avenue
Contact: 479-783-0229

  • A special display of photographs by J.P. Bell and Tom Kennon will be on display at the Main Library during the months of July and August. Perfect for the hot summer months, these photos focus on the Arkansas outdoors including plenty of cool water streams, rivers and waterfalls. Both photographers are avid outdoorsmen from Fort Smith.
  • J.P. Bell spent some of his early years on a farm along Clear Creek in the Ozark Mountains. As a child, J.P. and his family traveled from Arkansas to northern California on Santa Fe’s San Francisco Chief. From that time forward, railroads and the American landscape through which these trains passed captured his imagination. He has called Montana his “adopted” second home since 1975 when he and his wife spent two years working on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. Bell has photographed professionally since 1987. His photographic inventory includes images from the Ozark Mountains, western United States, Africa, the Middle East, South America and Europe. His special interests include transportation, landscapes, and whitewater sports.
  • Tom Kennon’s photography is based on scenic landscapes in Arkansas, with an emphasis on streams, waterfalls, and wildflowers. In addition to his photography, Kennon has written two books about paddling; Arkansas Whitewater Rivers, and A Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to the Ozarks. His paddling allows him to visit places that many Arkansas are unable to travel; his photographs make it possible for all of us to enjoy the wonders of the Arkansas landscape. Bell and Kennon’s photographs will be on display at the Main Library through the end of August
