“A 1979 visit to the blockbuster Pompeii super-show at the Museum of Natural History in NYC got me thinking. The story of the city of Pompeii and its dramatic end was told with plaster casts, artifacts, and of most interest to me, scale models. The decline of commercial properties along the old roads that had been bypassed by the interstate was already on my mind. It occurred to me that the past is the past, be it 2,000 years or just 20 years ago. I somehow got the notion that I could build a super show, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale, bringing the old roads back to life. Charles Demuth did a painting of grain silos which he entitled My Egypt. For what it’s worth, this show is my Pompeii.” – David M. Rose
